A Night in the Life of Our Hedgehog (Caught on Wildlife Cam)

This is what some of you have been waiting for. I promised I’d update you all on our resident hedgehog with some videos if I got a wildlife cam. Well, I did, and here are some of my favourites.

For those who didn’t see the original post you can read it here.

The wildlife cam I’m using is this one: GardePro E8P Max

I’ll get up when I’m good n ready!

That’s the foot you can see poking out of the hay at the top of this post. This was as much as I was getting that day. Sometimes it gets up about 20:00 and goes to bed at 06:30. On other occasions it gets up at 22:30 and goes back to bed at 01:30.

I’m feeling a bit peckish

One hedgehog wolfing down its food like there’s no tomorrow.

Could do with a drink after all that food

You’d be surprised how much they drink. I change the water every day because hedgehogs are mucky eaters and it’s usually full of crumbs, but more than half of it has usually gone too.

Time for a stroll

Time for a post-prandial peregrination, as one of my old friends (Ben) used to say.

Let me in!

This one made me laugh. I’d cut a small section out of the fence around the herb garden so the hedgehog could get in. It’d already been in there on numerous occasions but this time it got the trajectory wrong. You can see it’s also annoyed when it realises.

I can smell something

Nose up, whiskers going, working out which way dinner is.

Found it but kibble is better

As it is exploring, it finds a snail, which they are supposed to eat. It sniffs it and walks straight on. Clearly it thinks the hedgehog food is better than eating snails. I haven’t tried the hedgehog food, but having tried snails, I can believe it.

Hello, what’s round here?

Time for some exploring. I wonder what is in this really tight space between this pot and the fence? Let’s see if I can squeeze in there.

Time for a scratch before bed

A good scratch and a shake seem to be part of the bedtime routine. How it manages to get a back leg in amongst all those spines without doing itself an injury, I’ve absolutely no idea.

So that’s a night in the life of our hedgehog. If you’ve got one visiting your own garden, I can recommend a wildlife cam, as you’d never know half of what goes on out there otherwise.

Stay tuned!
